General Information:

This is my favorite dealership of all time but I have never been there. I was a Pontiac man in my younger years and I loved and owned many of them. I had a few dream cars such as the SD-455 Trans Am (I owned a 1978 TA). My big one was the Royal Bobcat 1969 GTO with a Ram Air V. There was very few of these but I have seen them at auto shows and such. I even saw a boat that had a Ram Air V in it. Amazing.

I remember buying a new Pontiac and the salesman and I got to chatting about cool Pontiacs and I told him about my dream to have the 69 Bobcat Ram Air V and he said "are you messing with me right now?" I said "not at all, why?". He flipped the picture frame on his desk around and there it was, the Ram Air V Goat. We both started laughing as it was quite the coincidence. He had a perfectly restored version of one of the originals.

Getting back to Royal, it was a hub of Pontiac racing in Detroit. George DeLorean, (John's brother) used to operate out of here. He was always bringing the latest cool Pontiacs out on Woodward where people could check them out and race. I believe the first "Screaming Chicken" Trans Am was introduced in this way. It was pretty controversial at the time.

I loved the late 70's T/A's but others thought they were too cheesy. Royal was also a place where you could buy a high performance engine in a crate. Very cool in those days. Another guy who was affiliated with Pontiac racing was Jim Wangers, who was the famous "ad man" who was instrumental in the creation of the GTO itself. He may have been the one that debuted the 70's Trans Am, my memory is foggy on that.

Eventually, that sort of auto fell out of vogue due to smog regulations and gas prices. Royal Pontiac became Ace Wilson's Pontiac then Jim Fresard Pontiac which operated for many years. We all know Pontiac ceased to exist which killed me. The dealers all closed and eventually this location was demolished entirely. Pardon any mistakes in my memories of this stuff, there are many other sites that detail the Royal Pontiac/George DeLorean/Wangers saga better than I am doing here.
