General Information:

This was a menswear chain which was considered pretty classy during it's heyday. It goes back to 1910 when Fred Hughes and Leslie Hatcher opened up a carriage trade retail store at Woodward and Montcalm. By 1932, Russian immigrant Jacob Pincus bought the store as it went bankrupt during the depression. He retained the original name.

His son took over and expanded the chain across several states, selling it in 1977. At one point they had 61 stores in 6 states. The final owner was United Department Stores. By the early 1980's the chain fell on hard times and began closing it's stores. By 1983, the last stores were closed and that was the end.

I worked at the location in Northland Center for a couple of days in sales but the manager didn't feel I was aggressive enough so we parted company. Ha ha ha. This page will act as a record for the entire chain, which had various locations in and around the Detroit Metro area. I will add more information as I find it.
