A look back at Royal Radio
Harry Showers, the owner of Royal Radio, and Ray Olson, the second owner of Northern TV were born on the same day of the same year—Mar. 12, 1924. The competitors liked to argue who was older, but when it came to business, they got along just fine, said
“There was a time when there were five or six television repair shops along 11 Mile Road,” Sheppard said. “If someone needed a part, they would just swap back and forth.”
Royal Radio opened in 1947 in the building that is now on the other side of Main Street, but as the business grew, it needed more space and moved to 612 N. Main, according to Sheppard. “There was a time when Royal Radio handled all the car radio factory warranties for the Big Three,” Sheppard said. “These days, it almost impossible to change or replace a car radio because they are built right into the dashboard.”
Showers and his staff were also known for their excellent customer service—teaching people how to use electronic products, only to have them leave and purchase the items at a big-box store or on the Internet, Sheppard said. “The same thing happened to Dunn's Camera Shop,” he said. “They couldn’t survive.”
Royal Radio closed its doors in February 2008. Showers died July 28, 2011, He was 87 years old.
